The Real Property Administrator (RPA®) Designation from BOMI positions property managers for success by giving a complete understanding of the diverse aspects of a building in its entirety. It also signals to those in the industry a level of in-depth knowledge and the ability to maximize income and minimize risks, which sets you up for long-term success and career advancement.

Experience Requirement

You can begin pursuing your RPA® at any point during your career. Before you are awarded the designation, you are required to demonstrate three years of verifiable property management experience. You can begin working on these courses prior to completing your three-year requirement. The criteria are outlined in the Experience Form, which you can access here.

Where Can I Take Classes?

Classes are offered in a few different formats.

Classes can be taken through your BOMA Local, Seattle King County. RPA® required courses are offered on a rotating basis annually, both online and in-person. These courses are taught by local CRE professionals in a live classroom format and count towards Continuing Education Real Estate Clock Hours through the Washington State Department of Licensing.

BOMI has also rolled out a new capstone experience, beginning in January 2021. This program offers students the opportunity to take all required RPA® courses in an online, self-paced virtual learning platform. After completing each course, an online exam will be administered to finalize the completion of the class. Upon the completion of all required courses in the RPA® curriculum, a final, comprehensive exam, administered at a testing center, will be scheduled. An RPA® exam prep course is offered from BOMI but is not a required course. Once the final exam is completed, your RPA® Certification will be official.

Ultimately, your RPA® can be completed by taking a mix of classes from BOMA Seattle King County and the BOMI Live Virtual Learning platform. Courses can be taken in any order.

What is the cost and time commitment of obtaining my RPA®?

The cost of obtaining an RPA® can vary depending on the organizations and platforms used to take each course. The average cost per course is approximately $1,200 for BOMA members. The program takes an average of three to four years to complete. After receiving your RPA® designation, you will hold the certification indefinitely, if 30 hours of continuing education are taken every two years.

BOMI International, in collaboration with our testing partner, Pearson VUE, is pleased to announce a new exam option to complete your BOMI International course. For selected courses, we will be offering a new online proctored testing experience through Pearson VUE’s OnVUE platform. This platform allows for 24/7 testing opportunities from your home using your own computers and Internet connection.
 
The OnVUE exam experience features:

• A secure browser that prevents access to other applications/content during exams
• In-exam chat and phone support
• A system testing process that enables candidates to verify their equipment and access before scheduling the exam
• Mac and Windows support
• Bring-your-own-device policy (you may not use tablet, mobile, and touchscreen devices)
  • Note: Learners are responsible for verifying that their device works with the OnVUE software prior to scheduling the exam (there is no refund if you do not verify this)

For security purposes, learners taking their exams via OnVUE will be monitored via webcam by a live proctor. Proctors are in place to ensure exam security and will note abnormalities and other testing-related incidents that could impact final exam credit. Exams are terminated immediately if prohibited behavior is detected. These session events are logged and will be provided to BOMI International for action as required following exam completion.

Ready to grow your career and expand your horizons? BOMA International Chair Brian Cappelli, BOMA Fellow, RPA, unveiled a new certification for early-career professionals at the Sunday General Session. The Certified Manager of Commercial Properties certification, or CMCP, offers a straightforward way to communicate property management skills to potential employers.

The CMCP certification is offered by Commercial Real Estate Certification Institute (CRECI), an independent certification body backed by BOMA International and BOMI International. The certification requires a few years of formal, post-secondary education and/or a few years of on-the-job property management training, as well as 30 hours of training specific to property management. “Supervisors can use the CMCP to evaluate a property manager’s readiness for increased roles or responsibilities,” Cappelli explained. The certification also helps supervisors “uncover areas where more experience or training may be helpful and … provide recognition of achievement.”

A beta test of the exam was run nationally and 71 people achieved the certification. Of those that took the exam, 16 were from BOMA Seattle King County! See all the names here.

Time Commitment

Teaching these classes require a level of commitment great deal of time not only during the class but also preparing for it. Depending on the course, you may teach the entire course or partner with another instructor to teach a portion of it.

Compensation

Compensation depends on the length of the class and if you are teaching the entire class or only part. Instructors should also keep copies of parking receipts for reimbursement. 

Am I Qualified?

The Fundamental Qualifications below are outlined for instructors teaching BOMI courses. These are qualities are suggested and the idea is that the more suggested experience and abilities a candidate possesses, the greater the chances are that the candidate will be competent to present the course and comfortably field job-related questions and concerns from learners.

• Go deep into life cycle issues. What is life cycle, instead of discussing how to deal with waste. How do we prevent it, where does it start, the major? Washington DC? What if we closed all our landfills tomorrow? What would happen? What is the cost?

• Optimize utility – rebates, managing energy systems, tools for monitoring, incentives available
• New Waste – what are the requirements? How do you meet them?

The Level I course provides 74 hours of classroom training, hands-on projects, and exams one day a month over a period of 7 months.
