Gender neutral restroom facilities are becoming more and more common. A survey was sent out recently to our membership to see the current status of gender neutral restrooms available as well as what the future trends might be.
Here are the results:
38.58% of existing buildings currently provide gender neutral restrooms
Of those that don't currently provide gender neutral restrooms, 23.08% are planning to add them to existing properties in the next five years
The respondents who are developing or planning to develop new projects in the next five years are split down the middle as far as providing gender neutral restrooms and not providing gender neutral restrooms
Based on the survey results, gender neutral restroom facilities may be more prevalent in new construction
Some general thoughts from the respondents:
Providing gender neutral restrooms eliminates one area of potential uncertainty and discomfort for our tenants, employees, and guests
We
have "family" restrooms that we consider gender neutral
Gender
neutral restrooms are the best choice for single use restrooms. We don't
currently have any single user restrooms.
I have
sympathy for the challenges transgender face however, I would rather avoid
making our tenants uncomfortable by identifying restrooms as gender neutral.
