Meet Our New Intern: Amber Eswani

Please join us in welcoming our new Fall Intern, Amber Eswani! She will be supporting our education and marketing efforts and comes with an impressive background in film and video. When you see Amber at the next BOMA event, please say hi!


Here's more about Amber in her own words:

Hello everyone! My name is Amber Eswani and I’m the intern this year for the BOMA Seattle King County team. I’m from Chicago, Illinois and have just recently relocated to Seattle. I graduated from the Southern Illinois University of Carbondale studying in Radio, Television and Digital Media with a minor in Journalism.

My background experience is in film and photography - I have worked for PBS, Showtime, and on many independent film and web series projects in the Chicago area, and have even created my own short film called “Fuzzy Legs”- ask me about it!

In my spare time I enjoy swimming, playing ukulele, salsa dancing, exploring the city, going hiking and I can’t wait to check out the farmer’s markets here. I look forward to meeting you all and thanks for reading. See you soon!

Call for Volunteers: The Sophia Way

BOMA Emerging Professionals are organizing a volunteer event at the Sophia Way and we'd like you to join!

Date: Wednesday, August 21, 2019
Time: 1PM-4:30PM Volunteer Event, 4:30PM-6PM Happy Hour at Henry's Tavern
Location: 3032 Bellevue Way NE, Bellevue, WA 98004


Please Join fellow BOMA members on Wednesday, August 21st as we team up to help The Sophia Way, the only women’s shelter on the eastside. The Sophia Way heavily relies on the support of volunteers and donations and its back-storage room is in need of a makeover!


Creating a more organized storage area will help staff sort and store donations that are currently just too difficult to keep up with. Its backroom is more than just a storage room however, it's also a closet for the ladies currently staying at the shelter. It provides them the with clothes, home goods and other necessities that are essential to providing stability and independence, which are the first steps to permanent housing - the ultimate goal of The Sophia Way.


We are looking for a group to donate their time and help reorganize the shelving and items in the storage area. BOMA is supplying all the necessary materials, we just need the bodies! A happy hour will follow at Henry's Tavern in Bellevue.

September General Meeting: State of Public Safety Issues Affecting Our Industry & Results of BOMA Member Survey

This month's general meeting will feature the state of Public Safety Issues affecting commercial real estate in our area. Our keynote speaker, Andrew Thibault from EMC Research, will explain the results of the BOMA Public Safety Survey.

The BOMA Public Safety Survey was created in response to many members’ reports that the criminal behavior and mental health crisis in King County has been increasingly impacting building operations and costs, as well as tenant safety. The goal of the survey is to provide us with factual, quantifiable data which we can use to approach our local elected officials and media.

Soar to New Professional Heights: Get Your CMCP

Ready to grow your career and expand your horizons? BOMA International Chair Brian Cappelli, BOMA Fellow, RPA, unveiled a new certification for early-career professionals at the Sunday General Session. The Certified Manager of Commercial Properties certification, or CMCP, offers a straightforward way to communsicate property management skills to potential employers.

The CMCP certification is offered by Commercial Real Estate Certification Institute (CRECI), an independent certification body backed by BOMA International and BOMI International. The certification requires a few years of formal, post-secondary education and/or a few years of on-the-job property management training, as well as 30 hours of training specific to property management. “Supervisors can use the CMCP to evaluate a property manager’s readiness for increased roles or responsibilities,” Cappelli explained. The certification also helps supervisors “uncover areas where more experience or training may be helpful and … provide recognition of achievement.”

A beta test of the exam was run nationally and 71 people achieved the certification. Of those that took the exam, 16 were from BOMA Seattle King County! See all the names here.

2020 TOBY Awards - Call for Entries

BOMA Seattle King County invites you to enter the2020 TOBY® contest and begin the process that could result in International recognition for your outstanding building and management team.Consider entering your building and perhaps we will be celebrating with you next June at the International Conference held in Philadelphia, PA!

This past June, Smith Tower and the Unico Properties Team dominated the Historical Building Category at the International TOBY Competition in Salt Lake City, UT. Read more about their exciting win here.

Please note that only the entry form and registration fee are due by than October 18, 2019. The judging will take place in late October.It is our goal to provide the Pacific Northwest an entrant in all 16 categories on the International level in order to accurately portray the splendor that encompasses the buildings throughout our region. This year, binders won't be necessary since the entire process will be done online. More information will be sent to those that submit an entry form.

The Outstanding Building of the Year (TOBY®) Awards are the most prestigious and comprehensive programs of their kind in the commercial real estate industry recognizing quality in buildings and rewarding excellence in building management.

New Public Safety Documents Available

Public safety is a growing concern in Seattle and many major cities. BOMA’s Public Safety Task Force has created a contact list of public safety resources for members with properties and businesses in the City of Seattle. The document provides the agencies and organizations you can contact for assistance in helping persons with mental health struggles, to find them shelter and services, and to report unwanted encampments or behaviors. In addition, the Report It document provides information on how and when to report.

The Task Force will develop similar resource documents for the City of Bellevue, King and Snohomish counties and other local municipalities. These will be posted to BOMA’s website as they are completed.
