As the U.S. Congress heads into its traditional August recess, Democrats have strung together a number of success stories to advance their agenda. On Sunday, August 7, the Senate approved the most significant legislation, the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, which contains key provisions on climate and health care issues and promises to reduce the federal deficit by raising the corporate tax rate. The article below provides more details on the entire package, which the House is expected to approve this Friday, August 12. BOMA International staff and our partners put considerable effort into successfully retaining the current carried interest rules in this legislation, while supporting needed investment in traditional infrastructure.

In Washington, the summer recess provides us with the opportunity to catch up on the issues and meet with D.C.-based staff. It also provides you with an opportunity to engage with your senators and representatives back home. Meeting with your elected officials about policy issues is a lot easier than most people think.

During the recess, particularly during an election year, elected officials spend a great deal of time in their communities. They may be at a civic meeting, a local school or a charity event, and they are likely spending time in their local offices. Taking these opportunities to seek out your members of Congress is an important part of BOMA’s political success. Meeting with lawmakers is as easy as calling the U.S. Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and asking for your House or Senate member’s office.

Once connected, ask for the scheduler and request an in-district meeting. When you meet, we encourage you to talk about any issue important to you.
