Lunch & Learn: Seattle Building Performance Standards Policy Development - Date: April 13, 2022 at 12:00pm - Presented by Nicole Ballinger, Seattle Office of Sustainability and Environment & Additional Speakers from SCL and NEEC
The Office of Sustainability and Environment (OSE) is conducting stakeholder engagement on creating draft legislation for new City of Seattle regulations for commercial and multifamily buildings 20,000 square feet and larger that would reduce climate-polluting emissions and transition towards cleaner, healthier places to live and work. Called ‘Building Performance Standards,’ (BPS) these carbon emissions targets would become gradually stronger over time towards a goal of cleaner, healthier, ‘net-zero’ carbon emissions buildings by 2050, while improving the quality of life for residents and creating local, well-paying jobs. Join Nicole Ballinger and Sandra Mallory at this online presentation to learn more about what’s being considered.

BOMA Power Hour April 26, 2023 Understanding Pedestrian Levels of Service in Your Buildings and Lobbies Presenters: Lerch Bates Team Members - Cameron Dargahi, Associate Consultant & Kristi Church Architectural Design Consultant
Description: The demand has been recognized for a need to examine pedestrian flow through commercial RE designs designs. The new, Lerch Bates Pedestrian Circulation discipline has developed a unique digital solution that allows these elements to be considered holistically, with each element individually and concurrently modeled. This service evaluates the cumulative relationships of entry doors, lobbies, escalators, stairs, and elevators on people movement. These elements are combined into a single visual simulation which can determine the affect and opportunity afforded by alternative designs. Our simulations determine the impact of multiple facility ingress and egress scenarios based on the density of people in the client’s design...

Description: The use of refrigerants is widespread, in varying applications from food safety and medicine preservation to air conditioning in our vehicles and buildings. This presentation will examine the past and current landscape of refrigerants in relation to building operation, including environmental impacts, regulatory considerations, and end-of-life disposal. We will discuss the history of refrigerants, looking at factors that caused the shift away from natural refrigerants to synthetics. We’ll also look at new products and regulations on the horizon, and why the industry is trending back toward natural refrigerants, with many benefits including increased energy efficiency, environmental sustainability and financial savings.

Presented by Wade Vorley, Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates Inc. - May 16, 2018. We all know that roofing materials have a finite life and as they age roof leaks can become a thorn in your side, upset tenants, and increase maintenance costs. At this point, roofing materials are typically removed, the trash sent to landfills, and the entire assembly, including insulation, installed new. Sometimes roofing systems can be recovered but the success of this method is often limited. This power hour outlines when a recover is advantageous, pitfalls to avoid, and a few methods to make your recover a success.

9/12/18 Engineer Skills Hour features a presentation by Cal Bearman from Wiss, Janney, Elstner. On November 17, 2016, the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued a final rule updating its general industry Walking-Working Surfaces standards specific to slip, trip, and fall hazards. The new rule governs a wide variety of conditions, including fixed ladders, low-slope roofs, and rope descent systems. The rule also includes a new section under the general industry Personal Protective Equipment standards that establishes employer requirements for using personal fall protection systems. Portions of the new rule become effective as soon as January 17, 2017, and will have significant ramifications for many buildings, particularly for buildings where window washing and other maintenance activities are completed via rope descent systems, which are sometimes referred to as boatswain's (or bosun's) chairs.
